Building a Digital Audience from Scratch

Jaywalker Pictures is my YouTube channel and digital business teaching Procreate and iPad drawing. I built it from zero to 60,000 subscribers and 3.4 million views over four years — entirely through organic search, content strategy and an obsessive focus on audience retention.
No paid advertising. No viral moments. Just a systematic approach to understanding what people search for, what keeps them watching, and what converts them from viewers into customers.

Growing a YouTube channel in a competitive niche requires understanding search behaviour, thumbnail psychology, retention curves and content sequencing. I researched what beginners actually search for, built content around those queries, and optimised titles, descriptions and thumbnails iteratively based on performance data.

Content Strategy
I mapped the full audience journey — from first-time visitors discovering the channel through search, to engaged subscribers, to paying customers. Each piece of content serves a specific role in that journey.
Discovery content targets high-volume beginner search queries and converts viewers into subscribers.
Retention content builds deeper engagement with the existing audience through structured series and progressive skill development. The six-part Learn to Draw in Procreate series takes subscribers from beginner to confident artist across 12 videos, combining free public theory lessons with private practical tutorials - creating a natural conversion pathway into paid products.
Authority content demonstrates depth and positions the channel as the go-to resource.
Digital Product Ecosystem
The content strategy feeds a full digital product funnel:
- Procreate brush sets — one-off digital downloads
- Learn to Draw Bundle — structured six-part curriculum launching mid-2026
- Patreon membership — ongoing bonus content, files and community access
Email Marketing
Built and maintain an email list of warm subscribers via MailerLite. Designed segmentation strategy separating general subscribers from high-intent buyers, with targeted sequences for each. Also designed and executing reactivation campaigns for product launches.
Results
Doubled subscribers within two years of launch. Achieved YouTube monetisation status. Launched three digital products and a Patreon membership. Secured brand collaborations with Torras Global, Indeed.com and Skillshare. Built a content-driven business generating consistent monthly revenue from multiple streams.
